This file contains corrections, additions, and information supplemental to the printed Persuasion 2.0 documentation. The major sections are: “Installation Messages,” “Additional Feature Information,” and “Documentation Corrections and Clarification.” We urge you to print and carefully read this file before you start working with Persuasion 2.0. Keep it as a reference and a supplement to your Persuasion documentation.
1. INSTALLATION MESSAGES
In rare cases, the Persuasion 2.0 Installer will encounter a problem while installing Persuasion 2.0. When it does, the Installer displays an error message or ejects the disk. Some of the possible error messages you may encounter during installation are listed and described below.
Not Enough Memory
You do not have enough memory installed on your Macintosh to run Persuasion 2.0. The minimum memory requirement is 1 MB of RAM. If your computer has less than 1 MB, you must upgrade your Macintosh before you can install Persuasion 2.0.
File Not Found
The Installer cannot locate a file because the file name has been changed or the file has been moved to a different folder. If you are installing Persuasion 2.0 from backup disks, quit the installation and make sure the backup disk and file names match the master disk and file names exactly. Also, make sure the folders on the backup disks contain the same files as the folders on the master disks.
File Locked
While reinstalling Persuasion 2.0 on your hard disk, the Installer encountered a locked file. To reinstall Persuasion 2.0, quit the installation, unlock the Persuasion 2.0 files on your hard disk, and start the Installer again.
Serious Disk I/O Error
Either your Persuasion 2.0 package contains a damaged disk or your hard drive is damaged. If you suspect that your Persuasion 2.0 disks are damaged, call Aldus Customer Service at (206) 628-2320; if you are outside the United States or Canada, contact your local dealer or distributor. If you suspect that your hard disk is damaged, quit the installation and refer to your hard disk documentation for information on running a diagnostics program.
2. ADDITIONAL FEATURE INFORMATION
New Export options
Check “Builds” to export a copy of your slide for each slide layer. That is, Persuasion 2.0 will export one Scrapbook image or PICT file for layer 1; another image or file for layers 1 and 2; another image or file for layers 1, 2, and 3; and so on. For more information on slide layers, refer to Chapter 6 in the “Aldus Persuasion 1.0 User Manual,” and to the “Aldus Persuasion 2.0 New Features Guide.”
Check “Fewer colors” to reduce the number of colors Persuasion 2.0 uses when exporting slides that use graduated fills for backgrounds. When you are exporting slides to a printer or film recorder that has a limited number of available colors, check this option to 1) reduce printing time and 2) make more of the printer’s colors available for printing PICT images and multiple objects that use graduated fills. When “Fewer colors” is checked, Persuasion 2.0 combines patterns and colors using a technique called dithering; the same visually effective technique used to create slide backgrounds for presentations shown on 8-bit color monitors. This option is device dependent. We recommend that you test several slides on your output device before printing your entire presentation. For more information on these options, refer to the “Aldus Persuasion 2.0 New Features Guide.”
New Page Setup options
The “Page setup” dialog box contains an option called “Fractional character spacing.” This option allows you to choose the character spacing that best suits your output device. In general, most output devices support fractional character spacing, while most applications that import PICT files do not. Therefore, it is usually best to leave “Fractional character spacing” on, unless you plan to export your slides for use in another application. If your application or output device does not support fractional character spacing, lines of text may appear longer than they do in Persuasion 2.0. If so, turn “Fractional character spacing” off and export your slides again. For more information about the “Page setup” dialog box, refer to Chapter 5 of the “Aldus Persuasion 1.0 User Manual.”
Handout masters
In Persuasion 2.0, you can select the rectangles that represent slide miniatures on a Handout master, and resize them by dragging a handle. You can also delete selected rectangles. When you delete rectangles, Persuasion 2.0 automatically updates the “Slides per page” setting in the “Page setup” dialog box to reflect the new number of rectangles shown on the Handout master.
The default size of the rectangles is automatically adjusted when you change the orientation of the slide master. However, once you resize the rectangles manually, Persuasion 2.0 will not resize them automatically unless you delete them all or change the number of “Slides per page” in the “Page setup” dialog box.
Note that the default size of the rectangles in Peruasion 2.0 is larger than it was in Persuasion 1.0. If you open a Persuasion 1.0 presentation in Persuasion 2.0 and that presentation contains a Handout master with graphics or text objects, you may need to reposition the objects on the Handout master to accommodate the new rectangle size. For more information about Handout masters, refer to Chapters 4 and 12 in the “Aldus Persuasion 1.0 User Manual,” and to the “Aldus Persuasion 2.0 New Features Guide.”
Slide sorter display
If you choose the “Black & white” command in the Slide sorter menu, Persuasion 2.0 draws slides with white fills and black lines. This option, now available for both color and black-and-white monitors, significantly reduces the time it takes for Persuasion 2.0 to redraw images on the screen.
Also, Persuasion 2.0 saves the Slide sorter display options you choose (“20%,” “33%,” “66%,” “Normal,” “Black & white”) as defaults for your AutoTemplate or presentation.
For more information about the Slide sorter, refer to Chapter 4 of the “Aldus Persuasion 1.0 User Manual.”
Interruptable drawing
You can interrupt Persuasion’s screen redraw in Slide, Master, and Slide sorter views by any mouse or keyboard action. This feature is particularly useful if you want to change scaling size, change magnification, or go to another view without waiting for Persuasion 2.0 to redraw the screen. For example, if you move a selection that contains many objects to a new position and then want to refer to the outline, you don’t have to wait for Persuasion 2.0 to redraw the objects in their new positions before you click the outline icon or choose “Outline” from the View menu. Once you choose the command or click the icon, Persuasion 2.0 stops redrawing the slide and displays the outline view.
Printing
Persuasion 2.0 supports color PostScript devices and will work with any Chooser-level color PostScript driver.
Persuasion 2.0 supports 32-bit QuickDraw. If you have a 24- or 32-bit QuickDraw video card installed on your Macintosh, objects and backgrounds that contain graduated fills will be displayed smoothly.
Persuasion 2.0 also imports and displays 32-bit PICTs, but some printer drivers have difficulty printing them. Therefore, we recommend that you save a presentation containing 32-bit PICTs before you print.
Graduated fills may have jagged edges when printed on a high-resolution QuickDraw device, such as a film recorder. For a work-around to this QuickDraw limitation, refer to your AutoGraphix manual.
To print a color presentation faster on a black-and-white printer using the Apple LaserWriter 6.0 driver, select the “Black & White” print option in the Apple LaserWriter “Print” dialog box.
For more information about printing, refer to Chapter 4 the “Aldus Persuasion 1.0 User Manual” and to the “Aldus Persuasion 2.0 New Features Guide.”
File saving improved
File saving in Persuasion 2.0 is four to ten times faster than it was in Persuasion 1.0. Presentations containing large EPS images show the most significant improvement in speed while saving.
New keyboard shortcuts
The “Set heading as...” command brings up a submenu that contains three new shortcuts:
- To convert a heading to a slide title, press Command + 1.
- To convert a heading to a subtitle, press Command + 2.
- To convert a heading to body text, press Command + 3.
Dictionaries folders and Persuasion Prefs files
You can use user dictionaries created in Peruasion 1.0 with Persuasion 2.0. Simply move (or copy) the dictionaries to the new “Persuasion Dictionaries” folder that is in the Aldus folder in your System folder.
Persuasion 2.0 searches for the “Persuasion Dictionaries” folder and “Persuasion Prefs” file in the Aldus folder, then the System folder, and, finally, the Persuasion 2.0 folder. If there are multiple copies of the “Persuasion Dictionaries” folder or “Persuasion Prefs,” Persuasion 2.0 uses the first copy it finds.
Grouped-object behavior
When you group objects that are on different drawing layers, Persuasion 2.0 leaves each object on its orginal layer. The objects will appear in slide shows and printed slide builds just as they would if they were not grouped. For more information, refer to the “Aldus Persuasion 2.0 New Features Guide.”
Line chart symbols
To turn off the symbol display in a selected line chart, choose “Symbols” from the Chart menu, then choose “None” from the submenu. For more information about enhancing charts, refer to Chapter 10 of the “Aldus Persuasion 1.0 User Manual.”
Kodak Datashow remote control
Arrow keys: The arrow keys on the Kodak Datashow remote control perform the same functions as the keyboard commands in Persuasion 2.0.
“Go to” commands: To go to the last layer of a selected slide, press the slide number, then press the N key.
SEL key combinations: Pressing the SEL key, then 1, 3, or 4 does not affect the Persuasion 2.0 slide show as described on the back of the remote control. The rest of the SEL key combinations work:
- Press SEL, then 0 to display a blank slide.
- Press SEL, then 2 to display a black slide.
- Press SEL, then 6 to toggle between having a visible and an invisible cursor.
- Press SEL, then 7 to toggle between automatic and manual slide advance mode.
- Press SEL, then 9 to exit the presentation.
Hide body text command and Outline behavior
If you drag a new slide title to a position subordinate to a slide title, the new slide title becomes a body text heading. If the “Hide body text” command in the Outline menu is checked, that body text heading will be hidden. To see the body text heading, uncheck “Hide body text.” For more information, refer to the “Aldus Persuasion 2.0 New Features Guide.”
Fill pattern behavior
If you assign a fill color to a single graphic object that has a fill pattern of “None,” Persuasion 2.0 changes the fill to a solid pattern before assigning the color. If you select multiple objects, Persuasion changes the fill to a solid pattern only if none of the objects already has a fill pattern.
To avoid creating undesired effects, Persuasion does not change the fill patterns of polygons and text blocks when you apply a color to multiple selections. To fill selected objects in a multiple selection, choose a pattern from the “Fill pattern” submenu.
For more information about fill patterns, refer to Chapter 8 of the “Aldus Persuasion 1.0 User Manual.”

• Aldus Persuasion 2.0 New Features Guide
Please correct the following text:
Page 19: Replace “Go to master” with “Slide master” in the first line of the bulleted paragraph.
Page 29: In the illustration’s callout text, replace “Reformatting” with “Defining an outline style for.”
Page 47: Add this sentence to the end of the paragraph under Step 5: Choose Acta or MORE 1 from the Format pop-up menu to export the file in the Acta or MORE 1 file format. If you use soft returns (Shift + Return) in your outline, export the outline in Acta format to retain them.
Page 64: The last sentence on the page states that smoothed polygons cannot be ungrouped. Smoothed polygons can be ungrouped. However, they may print at a lower resolution. When you try to ungroup a smoothed polygon, Persuasion 2.0 will display an alert box and give you the option to cancel the “Ungroup” command.
Page 93: Replace the paragraph under the heading “Grouping layered objects” with the following text: When you group objects that are on different drawing layers, Persuasion 2.0 leaves each object on its original layer. The objects will appear in slide shows and printed slide builds just as they would if they were not grouped.
Page 98: Delete the first bulleted paragraph.
Please note the following clarifications:
Page 54: Memory requirements given on this page are based on the requirements of an Apple 13-inch monitor. Requirements will be proportionally larger for larger screens.
Page 56: The second line of the first paragraph says, “The presentations will open in the order that you selected them on the desktop.” This is true only if the window or folder contents are displayed in icon or small icon view. If the contents are displayed in any other view (by name, date, size, kind, or color), the presentations will open in the order in which they appear in the contents list.
Page 58: Add these two keyboard shortcuts to the table:
To stop a slide show, type “H” (for halt).
To start the slide show again, type “R” (for resume).
Page 98: Replace the last two bulleted paragraphs with the following text: PICTs that are exported from Persuasion are optimized for printing on film recorders and may not always print correctly on PostScript printers. For example, white text and graduated fills may print as black. To print a PICT image correctly, import it into Persuasion 2.0 and ungroup it, or, if you are using the Apple LaserWriter 6.0 driver, choose the “Color/grayscale” option in the “Print” dialog box.
Page 107: The description of the “Promote subheads” command should read, “Moves all headings subordinate to the selected heading one level up (left).”
Page 114: The description of the “Background X” command should read, “Background X replaces the current master with Background X.”
